Applications of stainless steel can vary depending on your company’s needs. The different grades are determined by the degree and combination of elements mixed with the iron, carbon, and chromium to produce the stainless steel. Modern stainless steel may contain such elements as nickel, niobium, molybdenum, and titanium to boost corrosion resistance, add strength, ductility, and to weather environmental factors that are found in the upper atmosphere and outer space, or climates ranging from tropical, dry, temperate, cold and polar regions found on land and sea.
The most familiar type of stainless steel is Type 304, or simply, 304. An austenitic stainless steel grade, it has a wide variety of industrial applications. Primary uses are for architectural paneling, kitchen equipment like pots, pans, and cutlery, along railings, and also for the manufacture of springs, or marine equipment.
Comparatively, if your needs require exceptional toughness against corrosion with very excellent welding capabilities, then 316 stainless steel grade would be your prime choice. This includes boat fittings, jet engine parts, coastal architecture, or water filtration screens.
Add titanium to stabilize a 304 grade stainless steel and it produces a 321 stainless steel grade that is ideal for aircraft parts, mineral processing screens, expansion joints and furnace parts. Add the combination of niobium and tantalum, with other elements, to produce the 347 stainless steel grade. Another stabilized alloy, it’s ideal for high temperatures (800-1500ºF) over an extended work life. You will find this grade used in aeronautical applications, including aircraft component manufacturing such as aircraft collector rings, jet engine parts, and exhaust stacks. A nickel alloy grade stainless steel such as 625 is high heat resistant and corrosion resistant that can withstand exceptionally harsh environments. With its range of properties, industrial applications for 625 grade stainless steel includes usage in aircraft, steam turbines, medicine, nuclear power systems and chemical and petrochemical industries.
In addition to the many grades of stainless steel, there are many types of finishes for the various applications that stainless steel is used for. The finishes are numbered or coded: 1, 2B, 2D, 2BA (or simply Bright Annealed) 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and TR for Temper Rolled.
No. 4 “Brushed” finish is the most common. Easily recognizable, you’ll find the finish on nearly all stainless steel appliances. The brushed look has a bright finish and is characterized by short, uniform, parallel polished lines, with a visible directional “grain.” It is designed for daily use and to hide scuff marks, fingerprints, scratches and the like.
The most reflective surface and polished finish of stainless steel is No. 8. Polished to a mirror-like finish, it is made by polishing with successively finer abrasives and buffing extensively until all grit lines from preliminary grinding operations are removed. It is used for column covers, mirrors, ornamental trim, reflectors, signage, and wall panels.
