There can be a wide variety when it comes to stainless steel hardware products. 316 stainless steel is used in a variety of industries and in hundreds of applications because it is versatile, reliable, and economical. While the differences between a 316L and a 316 straight grade may seem insignificant, they are actually two-fold in both mechanical properties and chemistry. Nickel has been used for thousands of years and is one the most versatile materials in the industry. Today it is most commonly utilized in alloys. Due to nickel’s wide solubility range with many different alloy materials, including iron, aluminum, and titanium, makes it a highly used material. It’s slow oxidation rate makes it corrosion resistant and highly heat tolerant, allowing nickel alloys to be extensively used in the most challenging environments.

Many manufacturing and construction projects depend on specific materials, and that is why it is essential to understand and compare grades before purchasing stainless sheets, plates or bars.
For instance, if welding is your chief concern for your stainless steel plate or stainless sheet, the 304 Stainless Steel offers durability and strengthening capabilities. This is also a material grade that performs at relatively high temperatures making it ideal for industrial, architectural, and transportation applications. In comparison, the 316 Stainless Steel is optimal for applications requiring more extreme corrosion resistance. Due to the increased level of molybdenum present in its composition, it increases the corrosion resistance but is not as easy to machine. This material is typically used in applications with proximity to corrosive environments such as acids, chemicals, and salt water.
