200 Series

200 Series Stainless Steel

The 200 series stainless steels are austenitic alloys engineered for cost efficiency, substituting much of the nickel found in 300 series grades with manganese and nitrogen. This chrome-manganese (CrMn) composition — typically 16–19% chromium, 5.5–15% manganese, and 0.5–4.5% nickel — delivers higher yield strength than comparable 300 series grades, and allows engineers to specify thinner gauges without sacrificing structural integrity. The reduced nickel content makes 200 series a more economical choice for applications where premium corrosion resistance is not required; in harsh, marine, or chemically aggressive environments, grades like 304 or 316 will outperform it. For applications such as cookware, flatware, automotive components, and architectural trim, 200 series offers an excellent balance of performance and value.
