800 Series Stainless Steel
The 800 series, most commonly known as Alloy 800 or Incoloy 800, is a superaustenitic nickel-iron-chromium alloy engineered for extreme high-temperature performance rather than a traditional stainless steel grade. Its composition of approximately 39% iron, 30–35% nickel, and 19–23% chromium produces an alloy with exceptional resistance to oxidation, carburization, and stress corrosion cracking at sustained elevated temperatures up to 1500°F (816°C). For applications demanding even greater creep and stress-rupture resistance above that threshold, the controlled-carbon variants 800H and 800HT offer larger grain structures optimized for long-term performance under extreme heat. The alloy also performs reliably in corrosive environments containing chlorides, nitric acid, and sulfuric acid. These properties make Alloy 800 a go-to material in energy, chemical processing, and industrial furnace applications, including heat exchangers, process piping, ethylene cracking furnaces, and electric heating-element sheathing.
